This week P1 Motorpsort travel to Alcaniz in Spain, for the opening round of the 2010 Formula Renault 3.5 Championship at the Motorland Aragon circuit. Following months of pre-season testing and preparations, rookie drivers Jan Charouz and Walter Grubmüller Jr. are set to make their debut this weekend in the World Series by Renault.
This 2010 season’s race format has been simplified slightly. Each race will be preceded by the corresponding qualifying session, making each day of racing independent from the other. Also, on the Saturday of each event – with the exception of Monaco where only single race is scheduled - it is compulsory for the cars to be set up with a new “light” aero configuration. Competitors will use a smaller rear wing, with limited deflection angles fixed by the regulations, and skirts will aldo be banned. For Race Two, which will feature a compulsory pit stop to change at least two tyres, drivers will be able to choose their setup.
P1 Motorsport will be looking to start the season on a high – the British team having had a promising winter test programme, to add to their impressive record in the championship.
Speaking about the weekend ahead, Team Principal Roly Vinicni said: “It would be great to see both drivers continue the form they have shown throughout pre-season testing. If they can combine this, with a bit of luck on the day which they may need as rookies, I think we can hopefully be challenging for podiums.”
Czech Jan Charouz commented: “I have learnt the Motorland Aragon circuit during testing, and I like it. It’s an interesting track - fast with a challenging layout combined with downhill and uphill sections. I achieved quite good results in tests there, but the race is something different. I hope I will challenge for points-scoring positions. I would like to be in the top 10 in the overall rankings, so I have to achieve good results from the beginning of the season. Obviously, I am going to learn and gain experience too.”
Walter Grubmüller Jr. said: “I would like to finish both races in the points, but obviously, I would rather be in the top five. Formula Renault 3.5 is a tough series - driven very hard. We have to be careful not to get caught up in an incident, but this is a wide track, so it should be little bit easier here.”
